The foundation for today’s Mexico was laid by none other than Miguel Hidalgo, who went down in Mexican history as a hero. It was he who heralded Mexico’s independence from the Spanish crown in the 19th century – literally, because he is said to have called the inhabitants to revolt with the sound of the church bell in the parish church of the town of Dolores.
